The Algarvensis Geopark has been recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark, joining the Global Geoparks Network and enhancing the international prestige of the Algarve and Portugal in the promotion of geological, natural and cultural heritage. This area, situated in the south of the country, covers the municipalities of Loulé, Silves and Albufeira, spanning a continuous area of 2,427 km² that includes the Serra, the Barrocal, the coast and a significant marine component.

This distinction is the result of a joint effort between the three municipalities, the University of the Algarve, public bodies, the scientific community and local populations, as part of a strategy that combines science, education, sustainable tourism and community participation. With over 300 million years of geological history, the Algarvensis Geopark stands out for the international significance of its heritage and the contribution it can make to the region’s sustainable development.

With this designation, the Algarvensis Geopark now joins a network comprising 241 UNESCO Global Geoparks, spread across 51 countries, in a recognition considered historic for the Algarve and for the country. This achievement confirms the value of the region and opens up new opportunities to promote knowledge, protect natural and cultural resources, and establish the Algarve as an international benchmark for sustainability and regional development.
