Teleworking continues to gain ground in Portugal, driven above all by the growing adoption of the hybrid regime. According to the latest data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), in the last quarter of 2024, around 1.1 million workers carried out their duties from home, representing 21.5 per cent of the employed population. This figure reflects a 7 per cent increase on the previous quarter, with 73,300 more professionals taking up remote working.

Most remote workers opt for a hybrid model, alternating between face-to-face and remote days. Among those who worked from home, 37.9 per cent followed a mixed system, while 23.7 per cent were always teleworking. It should be noted that the hybrid format with a few remote days each week was the most popular, covering 310,900 professionals, which corresponds to 74.3 per cent of hybrid workers.

This new paradigm reflects the growing demand for flexibility in the Portuguese labour market. According to an analysis by consultancy firm Hays, more than half of the 900 employers surveyed already practise the hybrid regime, with at least one day of remote work per week. This trend contrasts with the decisions of some multinationals, such as Amazon, JPMorgan and Tesla, which have opted for a total return to the office, contrary to the preference of many workers.
