The Algarve reaffirmed its commitment to integrated and sustainable tourist growth, balancing development between the coast and the interior of the region. This was one of the main conclusions of the last conference in the “Tourism Strategy 2035 – Building Tourism of the Future” cycle, which concluded a series of debates held in all tourist regions of Portugal.

Held in the large auditorium of the University of Algarve, the session was attended by prominent figures, such as the Secretary of State for Tourism, Pedro Machado, the President of Turismo de Portugal, Carlos Abade, and local representatives such as André Gomes, President of Algarve Tourism Region, and José Apolinário, President of CCDR Algarve. The event highlighted the need to face priority challenges such as water scarcity, mobility and the lack of qualified labor.

Sustainability and innovation as strategic pillars

Participants highlighted that the future of tourism in the Algarve requires an integrated and collaborative approach between public and private operators. Investing in training, attracting talent and transferring knowledge was identified as essential to increasing the sector’s competitiveness. Furthermore, the importance of digitalization throughout the value chain was emphasized, aligning with the new demands of tourists, who seek authentic and sustainable experiences.

Generational change was also highlighted as a relevant factor for the future of the sector. Tourists increasingly value simple and genuine experiences, while at the same time demanding environmentally responsible practices. The adoption of these trends could generate greater added value for the regional economy.

A national effort to build the tourism of the future

This conference concluded a cycle that covered the seven tourist regions of Portugal, collecting contributions for the definition of the Tourism Strategy 2025-2035. However, the participatory process does not end here. Turismo de Portugal will continue to promote thematic sessions until the end of the year, addressing issues such as local communities, leadership, environment, mobility, international markets, technology and employment.

To ensure a comprehensive and inclusive strategy, an online portal was created where all interested parties can submit suggestions and comments. This effort aims to ensure that the vision for Portuguese tourism over the next decade reflects the sensitivities and needs of everyone involved.

A call for participation

The President of Turismo de Portugal highlighted that “the success of this strategy depends on the active collaboration of all agents in the sector”. Thus, an appeal for public participation was launched through the digital platform created specifically for this purpose.

With this collaborative and sustainability-focused approach, the Algarve positions itself as a region prepared to face future tourism challenges, remaining true to its identity while promoting balanced development between its different geographic areas.

Turismo de Portugal created the page https://participa-et2035.turismodeportugal.pt/TP_Forms/Estrategia< /a> so everyone can send suggestions and comments.
