From now on, digital nomads who choose to move to the interior of Portugal can receive support from the program ‘Emprego Interior Mais‘, regardless of their employer’s nationality.

Moving to the interior of Portugal now means that workers with temporary stay or residency visas can receive support from the program ‘Emprego Interior Mais’ if they work remotely, regardless of their employer’s nationality. This initiative aims to stimulate territorial cohesion and support digital nomads, including those who already have existing employment contracts.

Secretary of State for Employment, Miguel Fontes, quoted by Jornal de Negócios, announced that the changes were published in a decree in Diário da República on March 2nd. The changes aim to clarify pending issues in the application of the scheme and broaden its scope. The new scheme now includes remote workers, regardless of their employer’s nationality.

The objective of this measure is to stimulate territorial cohesion and harmonious development, correcting asymmetries of opportunities between the coast and the interior, and encouraging people to move to these regions.
